Owner and Admin Team

Hi my name is Maxine Johnson, I have studied since the age of 3. Competing in Latin, Ballroom, New Vogue, and studying in Jazz, Hip Hop and Contemporary. I am a qualified Adjudicator and coach and have received my ACHPER Certificate (Australian Council for Health and Physical Education)...

I opened Maxi-Jazz in 1987 and have trained many students who have successfully opened their own studios, with Ylanda now at the forefront as part owner and principal, bringing such a passion of dance, new ideas and development to our family friendly studio. It is a new beginning to our studio after 30 years of operation!

FUN FACT: I love spending time with my grandchildren!

Owner, Principal and Senior Teacher

Miss Ylanda, Principal and Owner of Maxi-Jazz Dance Studio has been dancing for 30 years. Styles that she has studied over these years include Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Pointe, Hip Hop, Funk, Cheerleading, Musical Theatre, Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue.

Ylanda has been teaching for the studio for 20 years now, with taking the final step in 2007 as becoming the Principal of Maxi-Jazz Dance Studio alongside Maxine, marking it her 10th year as Principal.

As well as just learning and teaching dance, Ylanda has performed at various events throughout New South Wales, and has competed in Ballroom competitions all over Australia.

Miss Ylanda took 9 of her students to participate in our USA Dance Tour in January 2012 and 16 students in 2014 with performances at Disneyland, California Adventure Park, Hollywood Boulevard and Universal Studios in LA .She and her students also took part in classes at ‘The Edge’ dance studio in LA and on ‘Broadway" in New York, taking classes in Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre and Ballet. In December 2016 she performed alongside 22 of her students on the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Sea. Miss Ylanda says ’these trips are an opportunity of a lifetime for myself and the students. We had an amazing time dancing in Disneyland and Universal Studios and learnt SOOO much from the amazing teachers in the USA dance studios. I can‘t wait to start planning 2018’s trip!!’.

Miss Ylanda has dedicated her life to dance and Maxi-Jazz, and enjoys nothing more than to see her students having fun, getting fit and confident by doing something they enjoy.

She is like a proud mum of each and every student, every time they step on the to stage to perform!

FUN FACT: I started dancing 2 years of age due to turned in feet! I’m a movie buff! I love to lay around with my boys and watch movies, especially Disney ones!

FAVOURITE STYLE: It’s hard to pick but probably jazz!

SHORT MESSAGE: To say I‘m excited about 2017 is an understatement! It’s my 30th year dancing (as well as Maxi-Jazz’s birthday), my 20th year of being a Dance Teacher and my 10th year being Principal! I cannot wait to see the growth and progress not only of the studio, but of all the students this year. I love watching everyone make new friends, become more confident and shine up on stage. I’m so excited to get to know more about our students and their families with our family fun days and events that are planned for this year. See you guys next week when classes resume, I can’t wait to meet our new friends and catch up with previous students.

<span id="MIRANDA">MIRANDA HYLAND</span>


Senior Teacher

Miss Miranda has been dancing with Maxi-Jazz since 1995 and in 2008 she joined the teaching staff, which over this time has studied many styles of dance including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue.

Along with being an enthusiastic and dedicated Senior Teacher, Miss Miranda has a Bachelor of Primary Teaching/Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies and works as a primary school teacher at a local Newcastle school. She is a passionate dancer with a love for dancing who continues to partake in her own classes under the instruction of Miss Ylanda. She takes pride in teaching dance to her students and loves seeing them enjoy dancing as much as she does.

Miss Miranda also joined Maxi-Jazz on their USA Dance Tour in January 2012, performing At Disneyland and Universal Studios in LA. She attended classes at "The Edge” dance studio in LA for classes in Hip Hop and Jazz, as well as classes on ’Broadway" in New York, studying Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz and Musical Theatre.

FUN FACT: I started dancing 3&1/2 years old and I started in the tiny tots in 1995 at Maxi-Jazz at the old studio location in Charlestown. I had my appendix removed when I was 14 years old.

FAVOURITE STYLE: My favourite style would have to be Jazz. It was where I started all those years ago. It has given me my foundation for dance, body control and discipline I need to pursue other styles of dance and I can express my happy smiling personality within these routines.

SHORT MESSAGE: In 2017, I’m most excited about working with a bunch of amazing ladies (new and old) and getting to see all our students try the new things (like cheer comps) that we have to offer this year at Maxi-Jazz!

<span id="NIKI">NIKI NICOLAOU</span>


Senior Teacher

Miss Niki joined our studio in 2013, although has been teaching dance since the age of 16. Miss Niki has so much talent and is a passionate teacher amongst our staff....

Miss Niki has trained in RAD Ballet, Khorabushka Character, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre. Miss Niki completed her Bachelor of Arts with a psychology and sociology major in 2014. Since then she has worked as a case manager in Out Of Home Care and in disability with Ability Links. Miss Niki is also the Newcastle Perform-Ability coordinator (in her spare time).

FUN FACT: I started dancing at 4 years of age. My belly button is both an inny and an outy???

FAVOURITE STYLE: I love contemporary!

SHORT MESSAGE: I am pleased to have reached 5 years teaching with Maxi Jazz this year 🙂 Thanks to all who have been a part of this.
I look forward to another year of hard work and dedication from our students and know the big 3-0 concert will be an absolute hit. Let’s do this!

Senior Teacher, Admin Team

Hi my name is Miss Holly and I have been dancing with Maxi-Jazz since 2010. Over the years I have taken classes in Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Burlesque and continue to study these styles of dance. In 2012 I joined the teaching staff at Maxi-Jazz and this will be my 6th year teaching.

Over the years I have performed in many local festivals, shows and events including in 2012 and 2014 being a part of the Maxi-Jazz America troupe who travelled to the USA and performed at Disneyland, California Adventure Park and Universal Studios. We also had the opportunity to take classes in Jazz, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre at ‘The Edge’ dance studio in LA and classes on ‘Broadway’ in New York studying Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz and Musical Theatre. This year I will continue to further my dance education and be a senior teacher at Maxi-Jazz. As well as being a dedicated senior teacher I am also currently studying at The University of Newcastle completing a Bachelor of Business. I have completed my first year and will be starting my second year in 2017.

FUN FACT: I began dancing at the age of 7 in 2002. I danced for 8 years before moving to Maxi-Jazz in 2010. As well as dancing I have always played and loved sport and have played many different types since the age of 5.


SHORT MESSAGE: Hi Everyone! I am so excited for the 2017 dance year and I hope you all are as well! I cannot wait to see all of our old students again and the new faces that are coming into our dance family this year. See you all at registration day and in classes when we finally start back up again!

My name is Miss Chelsea I am 21 years old and as well as dancing I am currently completing my degree in early childhood/primary school teaching! I have been dancing with Maxi-Jazz for 12 years and joined the teaching team in 2013. Over the years I have taken classes in jazz, hip hop, contemporary and cheerleading. I also travelled the America with the studio in 2014 and also travelled the seas in 2016 as part of our cruise performance troupe!

FUN FACT: I began dancing at the age of 10 in Miss Ylanda’s jazz class at Garden Suburbs Hall! I have done nearly every sport you can think of!

My name is Georgia Way, I may be known as Miss Georgia to some of you! I am 18 years old and just finished my HSC in 2016. I have been dancing for 13 years now with Maxi Jazz and have loved each and every year. Over the years I have taken classes in Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Cheerleading. I joined the Teaching Staff in 2015 as an Student Assistant Teacher, and in 2016 I became a Senior Teacher while still assisting and learning in my own classes. In 2016 I was a part of the Maxi-Jazz Cruise Performance Troupe on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of The Seas.

FUN FACT: I began dancing at the age of 5 in 2004 at Maxi-Jazz in Miss Maxine’s Junior 1 Jazz class (with Miss Ylanda as the assistant teacher haha!). As well as juggling school and dancing, I have played Netball for 12 years

Senior Teacher

Miss Annie has been studying and teaching dance at Maxi-Jazz since 1992. Over the years, she has performed and taught styles including Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Funk, Hip Hop, Cheer and Musical Theatre. She has performed at local festivals, shows, Ballroom competitions and other special events, and has enjoyed seeing many of her students do... the same since beginning her Dance Teaching career in 2005.

Miss Annie is a Primary Teacher currently teaching Kinder part-time, and holds a Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies with a focus on Creative Arts.

FUN FACT: I started dancing with Miss Maxine at the age of 4. I have a daughter, Alexia, who is 18 months old, and have 2 cats and a rabbit.

Senior Teacher

Miss Maddy believes that students achieve their best results in a warm and nurturing environment where they feel safe, secure and supported. She believes in helping children achieve what they never thought they could, through gentle and supported guidance and positive encouragement. She loves watching their emotional and physical self-grow as they explore and develop their passion and love for dance.

Miss Maddy is a qualified UCA & AASCF Cheer and Tumble Coach as well as having a Diploma of Children’s services and able to teach multiple styles including USASF Cheerleading (levels 1-4), Tumbling, Strength and Conditioning, Jazz, Hip Hop, Pom, Cabaret/Showgirl & Lyrical.

Shes been apart of the Newcastle Jets bombers squad, Newcastle Hunters, Hunter Jaegers & Maitland Mustangs cheer squads, as well as a Dance World’s Competitor (Disneyworld Florida) 2011 and 2015, Assistant coach 2015, Assistant choreographer for Starstruck, School Spectacular and Head choreographer Hunter school’s dance festival (Maitland High).

FUN FACT: I started dancing at the age of 5. I began with jazz & tap, under the guidance of my teachers at steps dance studio, Muswellbrook. I still remember my first jazz routine to "Barbie Girl". You may have seen me on Beauty & the Geek. I was a contestant on season 2 of Beauty & the Geek Australia, which aired in 2012.

FAVOURITE STYLE: It would probably be cheer! Closely followed by pom, which are two very different and separate styles.

SHORT MESSAGE: Hi everybody! I‘m so excited to meet you all and introduce you to the crazy world of competitive cheerleading! I’m also very excited to teach you my style of jazz, hip hop, pom and lyrical as I know it’s very different to what your used too. I can’t wait to push you outside your comfort zone, improve your ability and self-confidence, then watch you perform with beautiful big smiles and my cheerleaders, lots of big cheer facials!



Senior Teacher

My name is Donna Michalitsis. I have danced since i was 4 years old and have had many years of experienc3e. I was a student of Marlene Black (Newcastle - student of Tessa Maunder) RAD classical and Les Griffith (Newcastle - teacher of Dean Perry Tap Dogs) LGTDA Tap. I have also trained in singing and drama with Colin Chapman -Newcastle....

I have been running my studio in Newcastle for over 30 years. My students are very successful in eisteddfod work. One of my students recently won the Mattara Tap Championship and the Mattara Tap Scholarship ($2000 prize money). He was only 15.

3 of my students performed in the Tap Dogs, Steel City and Bootmen.

20 of my students appeared in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

My Students also appeared in the School Spectacular performing one of my tap routines, I have appeared in a number of musicals, in the chorus, the ballet and lead roles.

I am in partnership with Julie England in running and owning the Les Griffith Tao Dancing Academy syllabus, the most intricate syllabus on the marker. I am also a tap examiner.

I was part of the West Leagues Ballet for over 8 years and I also danced in Greece and Portugal.

I choreographed the musical BIG at the Kings theatre and my students appeared in the Stan Munro show at Wangi Workers Club. My students also appeared at Ryde Leagues Club many times and were chosen to tour America representing Newcastle with the education department. They also represented Newcastle at the Civic Theatre for a travel seminar ATEC.

I have been adjudicating eisteddfods for a number of years.

Hi, my name is Elise Sellick. I am 26 years old & a full-time mum to 3 precious little boys. Prior to becoming a mum in 2013, I worked as an office administrator at a financial planning firm. I have danced for approximately 20years doing ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary & even a little bit of ballroom dancing J I also enjoyed playing Netball for many years. In 2012, I was a part of Maxi Jazz’s first USA Performance Troupe and I joined the Maxi Jazz staff in 2016 doing Admin.

FUN FACT: I have been dancing in various locations since I was 3 years old & have been dancing with Maxi Jazz since I was 17. My favourite colour is green & my favourite food is chocolate


SHORT MESSAGE: I am so excited to be on staff again at Maxi Jazz this year & look forward to being a part of celebrating our 30 years of dance. Although I might be behind-the-scenes a lot, I am looking forward to seeing our students continue to develop a love of dance in 2017!

Hi my name is Cohle, I’m 32 years old and have 5 kids. I decided about 4yrs ago to take the plunge and start my fitness certs....

I personalise in weightlifting/bodybuilding, boxing, boot camps, circuits and anything high intensity. All I want is to help people achieve and grow from there goals.

FUN FACT: I love to change my hair style to suit the weather.

It is a safe, positive environment with emphasis on developing confidence, being a team player and acceptance of each individual child and their abilities and a positive influence on body image and encouraging our girls to be strong, confident and happy. And this is only made possible because of Ylanda, Maxine and all their staff.
